Environment / Ecology

Ecological consciousness has never been more important than it is today. For the past twenty years, interest in the environment has grown exponentially and will continue to grow due to deforestation, emissions, rising sea levels, and various other causes and effects of climate change. For Orthodox Christians, being stewards of creation is inextricably linked to the theological and humanitarian sensibility of the Church. Any principle or action that seeks to limit, undermine, or destroy this sacred fabric of humanity, according to His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, is to "fail to see it as a gift inherited from above.”

For decades, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocesan Council (GOAC) has advocated as a non-governmental organization (NGO) at the United Nations on the issues of ecology and environment. Currently, the GOAC contributes to environmental advocacy primarily through the NGO Mining Working Group but also throudh independent initaiatives.
