Lila Prounis elected to the Executive Committee of the NGOs

Mrs. Lila Prounis, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese NGO representative to the United Nations has been elected to the Executive Committee of the NGOs associated with the United Nations Department of Public Information at its Annual Business Meeting held at U.N. Headquarters.

Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are the “We the peoples…” of the Charter of the United Nations.  There are approximately 700 non-governmental organizations, international and national, religious, technical, humanitarian, women’s, service, professional, youth and other special interest groups which have accreditation with the Department of Public Information of the Secretariat for the purpose of supporting lans at the United Nations to improve living conditions and disseminating information.

The NGO Executive Committee meets monthly to discuss questions of common concerns and to plan weekly briefings at the U.N. annual conferences and orientation programs for new NGO representatives.

Mrs. Prounis is preparing papers with the advice of Father Alex Doumouras, Ecumenical Officer of the Archdiocese, to be submitted to the UN. Economic and Social Council so that the Archdiocese could have consultative status at the U.N.

Mrs. Prounis who holds a Masters Degree in International Law and Relations from Columbia University, has been a member of the Archdiocese Council for five years, has served as National Philoptochos Treasurer for eight years, and was President and Vice-President of the Archdiocesan Cathedral Philoptochos for nine years.
